A Bit about E.B. Coderre

Joseph Eudore Bernard “E.B.” Coderre homesteaded in spring of 1909, following a Christmas gathering at Philias Desnoyers Sr. farm in Thorne, ND, which included Philias “Pete” Desnoyers Jr. and Charles-Emile Brin.

E.B. founded the Post Office of Coderre, SK, named after himself on the suggestion of a missionary, Father Gravel (Gravelbourg namesake). The post office opened on October 15, 1910.  E.B. served as postmaster from about 1909 to 1957, when he retired. The Post Office was attached to his general store. He sold the store to sons Ivon and Edward after WW2. E.B. was an avid sportsman, and once owned a professional baseball team.

From the R.M. Rodgers book:

Eudore Coderre was the only son of John Coderre and Mary Daigle. He was born on June 12, 1887 in St. Damas, Quebec.

E.B. as he was known in the Coderre district, opened a store on his homestead. Shortly thereafter E.B. also became the postmaster and thus the village of Coderre got its name.

E.B. married Clodia Charbonneau on July 20, 1914. Clodia was born at home in St. John, North Dakota, U.S.A. on February 13, 1891. They had five children, Lionel, Ivon, Lorette, Edward, and Lucille.

E.B. was the postmaster in Coderre from 1909 to 1957 when he retired. He sold his business to his two sons, Edward and Ivon after the war.

E.B. was an avid sportsman. He once owned a professional baseball team. The only unpaid player on the team was George Duquette, a local fellow. E.B. always kept score at any ball game – where the team went – so did E.B. That was the only time the business (store and post office) was left to be taken care of by his wife and several clerks.

Every member of the Coderre family had to be married on a Wednesday because the premises were closed on Wednesday afternoon and to E.B. closing even an hour was terrible.

E.B. died in his home, suffering a heart attack on June 24, 1960. Mrs. Coderre passed away in a Regina hospital on January 24, 1965. Both are buried in the Coderre Roman Catholic Cemetery.
